Dr.Philip Hitti, Oak Tree of Shimlan


The Municipality of Shimlan honored the memory of Dr. Philip Hitti , a great Lebanese personality and Arab historian during a ceremony held at the public square where attendees witnessed the erection of a memorial of Dr. Philip Hitti offered by HE Minister Georges Frem on a parcel of land donated by Mr. Said Habib Hitti and his sisters.

Dr. Hitti is the brother of the Minister and Former Deputy Dr. Youssef Hitti and Messrs Diab, Najib, Georges and Mrs. Mariam Said Hitti and Nabiha Najib Jabbour.

 

Dr. Philip Hitti was born in 1886 in Shimlan . He studied under the oak tree of Our Lady of Secure - Shimlan then at the American school of Souk El Ghareb, later he attended the Protestant Syrian Faculty (American University) of Beirut graduating with a BA in 1908 where he acted as History teacher until 1912. He left Shimlan to the United States and got enrolled at Colombia University graduating with first honors PHD in 1915. In 1925 he was recruited at Princeton University as Arab History professor - Arab language. He was an institution builder who endeavored to establish the first Department of Arab Affaires at an American University which he administrated.

He managed later to convince Princeton University to teach Arabic language, Arabic literature, Islamic Religion and Arab History respectively . His record as a scholar is very well know. He was a remarkable Arab History professor for half a century, the first modern Lebanese historian, a leader in terms of the emancipation of modern Arab and Islamic history in American universities. He was also a visiting professor in Harvard University and member of the AUB Board. We should note the quality of students drawn to the university by the strength of his magnet which included amongst many others Costi Zurayk, Amine Fares and Gebrayel Jabbour.

The books of Dr. Hitti on Arab nations generally, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria are references. According to many testimonials the same regrouped integral and comprehensive periods of ancient times and history he has depicted as:" My books cover 6000 years ." The most famous editions are the History of Lebanon, the History of Palestine the Arab History, the History of the Near East, the History Makers and Lebanon in History.

After retiring in 1954 he continued his activities as visiting professor, researcher and Chair of the education committed by AUB (American University of Beirut) . He died in 1978 at 92 years old.
